Ā

Why buy every kumara from the supermarket when you could grow your own?

Ā šŸ’° One Little Plant. A Whole Lot of Kumara!

Ā

Here's where growing your own gets exciting!

With the right growing conditions and a bit of care, one kumara plant (slip) can produce around 1–3kg of kumara — and sometimes even 5kg!

Ā

That's potentially a lot of homegrown goodness from one little plant.

Ā

Imagine what a row of plants could produce!

Your actual harvest will depend on your soil, weather, growing season, watering and general care, but kumara can be a wonderfully rewarding crop for Kiwi gardeners.

šŸŒž How to Grow Kumara Successfully

Kumara love warmth, sunshine and well-drained soil. Give them a good start and let the summer do its magic.

Ā

šŸŒž1. Pick a sunny spot

Choose the warmest, sunniest part of your garden, with plenty of room for the vines to spread.

Ā

🌱2. Prepare your soil

Kumara prefer loose, free-draining soil. Prepare your growing area before planting, and avoid heavy, waterlogged ground.

Ā

ā„ļø3. Plant after the risk of frost has passed

Kumara are frost-sensitive and need warm conditions to establish and grow well.

Ā

šŸ’§4. Water and feed sensibly

Keep plants watered while they establish and during dry spells. Feed appropriately, but don't overdo it — too much fertiliser can encourage lots of leafy growth at the expense of your kumara.

Ā

šŸ‘€5. Keep an eye on those wandering vines

Kumara vines love to travel! Lift runners that start rooting along the ground to help direct the plant's energy towards developing its crop.

Ā

šŸ†6. Be patient — the reward is underground!

Kumara need a long, warm growing season. Harvest when the foliage begins to yellow and die back, before frost threatens.
